Installing Norton Antivirus on your computer is the first and most critical line of defense against digital threats, malware, and ransomware. Whether you have a retail box with a product key or purchased a subscription online, getting it up and running takes only a few minutes.
Follow this definitive installation walkthrough for Windows and Mac systems.
Before You Begin: The Clean Slate Rule
Before executing any antivirus installer package, completely uninstall any old, third-party security software running on your computer. Having two active antivirus programs running simultaneously will cause extreme system slowdowns, app crashes, and software conflicts.
Part 1: Downloading the Installer from Your Norton Account
- Open your web browser and navigate directly to my.norton.com.
- Click Sign In. Enter the email address and password associated with your account. (If you don’t have an account yet, click Create an Account to initialize a new profile).
- Once logged into the dashboard, click the Download button located on the Get Started panel.
- Link Your Product Key:
- If you bought your software online, your license is already linked.
- If you bought a physical retail card, click Enter a New Product Key, type your 25-character string, and click Next.
- Click Agree & Download to grab the localized installer package.
Part 2: Installing on Windows
- Open your browser’s download directory and double-click the downloaded file (typically named something like NortonDownloader.exe).
- If a User Account Control (UAC) security window pops up asking to allow the app to make changes to your device, click Yes.
- The Norton installation window will appear. Click Install.
- Choose Your Path: Select whether you want to join the community watch network (recommended for crowd-sourced virus intelligence) and follow the simple on-screen instructions.
- The system will download the latest database definitions and copy files over. Once done, click Explore or Finish to launch the software.
Part 3: Installing on macOS
- Navigate to your Downloads folder and double-click the downloaded zip file or disk image packet to open it.
- Double-click the Norton Security Installer app icon inside the folder window.
- When your Mac prompts you with a warning that the app was downloaded from the internet, click Open.
- Click Install on the main wizard splash screen.
- Enter your Mac’s administrator user password or tap your Touch ID sensor to grant system installation permissions.
- Crucial macOS Step (System Extensions): Apple restricts background access by default. When a popup appears saying “System Extension Blocked,” click Open Security Preferences.
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down to find the blocked notification from Norton and click Allow.
- Restart your Mac to complete the integration process.
