The Microsoft Store is an essential hub for keeping your apps updated, installing new software, and downloading Xbox games on your PC. However, it can occasionally experience technical hitches, refusing to open, throwing odd error prompts, or getting stuck on a spinning download wheel.
If your Microsoft Store app is behaving erratically, work your way through these proven troubleshooting steps to restore full functionality.
Fix 1: Reset the Microsoft Store Cache (WSReset)
Over time, the store saves a large file cache of temporary download files. If one of those files becomes corrupted or incomplete, it can block all future app actions. You can wipe this cache clean without losing any downloaded apps.
- Press the Windows Key + R to open your system Run dialog box.
- Type
wsreset.exeinto the text field and hit Enter. - A blank, black Command Prompt window will pop up on your screen. Do not close it.
- Let the tool run for about 10 to 15 seconds. The tool will automatically clear out the corrupt temporary cache folder, close the black window, and launch a fresh instance of the Microsoft Store app automatically.
Fix 2: Repair and Reset the Store App via Windows Settings
If clearing the cache file doesn’t help, Windows allows you to run an automated software verification check directly on the app package framework.
- Open your computer’s Settings menu (Windows Key + I).
- Navigate to Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & Features on Windows 10).
- Scroll down the list or use the search bar to locate Microsoft Store.
- Click the three horizontal dots next to it and select Advanced options.
- Scroll down until you locate the Reset section:
- Click Repair first. This attempts to patch structural problems without touching your app data.
- If the store still won’t load, return to this menu and click Reset. This completely refreshes the app’s internal setup data, requiring you to sign back in.
Fix 3: Sync Your Date and Time Settings
The Microsoft Store security architecture uses system timestamps to verify app security certificates. If your local computer clock is off by a few minutes, the store will block downloads to protect your machine.
- Head to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time.
- Make sure both Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically are flipped to ON.
- Click the Sync now button located down under additional settings to align your machine with Windows servers.
Fix 4: Re-register the Store via PowerShell
If the Store app seems completely broken or missing after a major Windows update, you can force the operating system to reinstall its app framework using PowerShell.
- Right-click your Windows Start icon and select Terminal (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin).
- Paste the following command into the prompt and press Enter:
Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
- Restart your computer once the execution script finishes running.
