You have successfully downloaded and installed Microsoft 365, but when you open Word or Excel, you are greeted with an annoying yellow bar across the top of your screen reading: “Product Deactivated,” “Unlicensed Product,” or “Subscription Expired.”
Activation issues are common, but they are rarely fatal. Use this comprehensive activation guide to quickly clear away configuration errors and unlock your apps.
Step 1: Confirm Your Subscription Status
Before changing any technical settings on your machine, rule out an accounting or payment issue.
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and log into your account.
- Locate your Microsoft 365 subscription tile.
- Check the status: Is it active, or has it expired? Check if your linked debit/credit card has expired, forcing a payment failure that put your account on hold.
- Crucial check: Ensure the email account you are logged into on this dashboard matches the exact email address you are typing into your Word or Excel login prompt.
Step 2: Run the Apps as an Administrator (Windows Only)
Sometimes Windows restricts permission access, preventing Microsoft 365 from writing the activation license files to your local registry database.
- Close all open Office applications.
- Press your Windows Key to open the Start menu and type Word.
- Right-click on the Microsoft Word icon and select Run as administrator.
- Click Yes on the security pop-up prompt.
- Once Word opens, try signing into your account again. This elevated access often lets the registration script complete successfully.
Step 3: Check Your Computer’s Date, Time, and Time Zone
Because Microsoft’s activation licenses rely on secure cryptographic timestamps, having your local clock skewed by even a few minutes can break the security handshake between your machine and Microsoft’s verification servers.
- Windows: Go to Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time. Toggle Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically to ON. Click the Sync now button under additional settings.
- Mac: Go to System Settings > General > Date & Time. Ensure Set time and time zone automatically is switched on and synchronized.
Step 4: Use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)
If manual tweaks fail, Microsoft offers a free native software tool designed specifically to scan, diagnose, and repair broken registry keys and background license credentials.
- Download the free Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant directly from the official Microsoft download page.
- Run the program installer on your PC.
- When the app opens, select Office or Microsoft 365, and choose the option that says “I’ve installed Office, but I can’t activate it.”
- Follow the automated wizard steps. The tool will scan your hidden licensing files, wipe out corrupt credentials, and force a clean re-authentication request.
