Setting up a brand-new Canon Pixma or ImageClass printer doesn’t require advanced technical knowledge. Whether you prefer a completely wireless setup or a traditional hardwired cable connection, this guide will walk you through the entire initialization process.
Phase 1: Unboxing and Hardware Prep
- Remove all protective orange shipping tape and plastic wrap from the exterior and interior of the printer.
- Open the main access door, insert the bundled ink cartridges into their designated slots, and push until they click securely into position.
- Load a stack of plain white paper into the main input tray and adjust the plastic guide sliders to fit the paper edges snugly.
- Plug the power cord into a wall outlet and turn the printer on.
Phase 2: Connecting the Printer
Method A: Wireless Wi-Fi Setup (Using the Screen Panel)
- On your Canon printer’s screen panel, press the Setup button (often represented by a tool icon) or navigate to the Wi-Fi settings menu.
- Select LAN settings > Wireless LAN > Wireless LAN setup.
- Choose Manual connect. The printer will scan for nearby networks.
- Select your home Wi-Fi network name from the discovered list.
- Carefully enter your network security password using the arrows or touchscreen keyboard, then click OK. The Wi-Fi light on the machine will stay solid once connected.
Method B: Traditional Wired USB Setup
- Do not plug the printer into your computer yet.
- Head to the next phase to download the drivers first. The software installation wizard will explicitly tell you exactly when to insert the USB cable to avoid configuration conflicts.
Phase 3: Driver and Software Installation
To ensure your computer communicates perfectly with all of your printer’s advanced features, install Canon’s native software suite.
- Windows & Mac: Open a clean browser window and head directly to ij.start.canon. Enter your specific Canon model number and download the primary driver installation package.
- Run the setup wizard. Choose your preferred connection method (Wireless or USB) when prompted. If you selected USB, plug the cable into your computer’s port now. Follow the final on-screen confirmation steps to complete the setup.
