It is a uniquely irritating issue: your Epson printer’s mechanical arm moves back and forth across the page, and the status bar claims it is printing successfully, but the pages come out completely blank or covered in faint, unreadable text lines.
Because Epson printers utilize permanent print heads built directly into the machine (rather than disposable print heads attached to individual ink cartridges), ink can dry out and clog the microscopic nozzles if the printer sits unused. Here is how to clear the blockage.
Fix 1: Perform an Automated Print Head Cleaning Loop
Every Epson printer features a built-in software maintenance routine designed to force pressurized ink through clogged nozzles to clear out dried sediment.
- Via the Printer Screen: Navigate to Settings or Maintenance > Print Head Cleaning. Select Start or OK.
- Via Windows Control Panel: Go to Devices and Printers, right-click your Epson printer, and choose Printing Preferences. Click the Maintenance or Utility tab and select Head Cleaning.
- Let the machine run its physical cleaning process (it will make some noise for 1 to 2 minutes).
- Crucial Next Step: Run a Nozzle Check or print a test page. If lines are missing, let the printer sit completely idle for 2 to 3 hours to allow the fresh ink to soften the remaining clogs, then run a second cleaning cycle.
Fix 2: Check Ink Level Breather Tape
If you recently installed brand-new ink cartridges and the pages suddenly started coming out completely blank, the cartridges might still be vacuum-sealed.
- Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
- Remove the ink cartridges from their slots.
- Look at the top of each cartridge. Ensure you have completely peeled off the bright yellow or orange plastic pull-tab labeled PULL. This tab uncovers a microscopic air hole that allows the cartridge to breathe. Without removing it, ink cannot flow out of the bottom nozzle.
