Whether you are switching away from an old email address you created years ago, rebranding your professional profile, or migrating to Outlook, changing your primary Microsoft Account email address is a straightforward process.
You don’t need to buy a new license or create a brand-new profile from scratch. Microsoft allows you to add an email alias, set it as your primary address, and safely phase out your old one without losing your Xbox achievements, OneDrive files, or Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
Step 1: Access the Account Alias Management Screen
Because changing your primary email identifier is a high-security action, Microsoft requires direct validation on your security settings page.
- Open your web browser and head to account.microsoft.com and log in.
- Click on the Your info tab located on the top left navigation menu.
- Scroll down to the Account info section and click the link titled Edit account info.
- For security validation, you will likely be prompted to re-enter your password or request a 6-digit verification text message to verify your identity.
Step 2: Add Your Fresh Email Alias
An alias is simply an alternative email identity that points directly to your same underlying Microsoft account.
- On the Manage how you sign in to Microsoft page, click the link that says Add email.
- Choose one of two paths:
- Option A: Select Create a new email address and add it as an alias if you want a brand-new
@outlook.comemail address. - Option B: Select Add an existing email address as an alias if you want to link an existing personal email address (like a Gmail or Yahoo address).
- Option A: Select Create a new email address and add it as an alias if you want a brand-new
- Click the blue Add alias button.
Step 3: Promote Your New Email to Primary Status
Now that your new email identity is linked to your account framework, you need to tell Microsoft to use it as your primary login ID.
- Look down your updated list of aliases on the account page.
- Find the fresh email address you just added.
- Click the Make primary link right next to it.
- Review the informational notification pop-up explaining the change and confirm your choice. Your new address is now your main account identifier!
Step 4: Manage Your Old Email Address (Important Safety Choice)
Once your new email is designated as primary, you have a crucial choice regarding what to do with your old address:
- Leave it alone (Recommended): If you keep the old email address on your list as an alias, you can still sign into your computer using either email address, and you will continue to receive any mail sent to your old address.
- Remove it: If you click Remove next to an old email address, it will be deleted from your account entirely.
- Warning: If your old email address used a Microsoft domain extension (like
@hotmail.com,@live.com, or@outlook.com), removing it deletes that mailbox forever. Senders will receive a bounce-back error, and you can never recover that specific address. Only delete it if you are certain you no longer need it.
